YE MIN TUN

When I was 19 years old in 1991, I was arrested for participating in a pro-democracy rally in Burma. For seven years, I suffered as a political prisoner. Under the military regime, there is no right to legal counsel and no rules governing the treatment of prisoners. I was denied access to my family, forced to live in conditions unfit for humans, and was subject to cruel interrogation and torture. When I was finally released in 1997, the government did not allow me to continue my education. Due to government oppression, I was forced to leave my country. But I still believe in Burma and am doing all I can to help my people who continue to suffer under this brutal regime.
